Breast Cancer Awareness: Small Ways to Make a Difference |
October is a reminder to look after our own health, check in on the people we care about, and support neighbors facing cancer. |

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while the pink ribbons are a familiar sight, the message behind them is worth remembering. It's about taking care of ourselves, looking out for one another, and supporting the people in our community who are facing cancer. The good news? Making a difference doesn't have to mean doing something big. Sometimes it's the everyday things that matter most. Start With YourselfBetween work, family, and everything else on the calendar, it's easy to put our own health appointments at the bottom of the list. If you've been putting off a mammogram, annual checkup, or conversation with your doctor, consider this your October reminder to make that appointment. Breast health is personal, and screening recommendations can vary depending on age, family history, and individual risk factors. Your healthcare provider can help you decide what's right for you. And if cost or insurance is a concern, California's Every Woman Counts program provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to eligible residents. A Little Help Can Mean a LotMost of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer—a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor. When someone is going through treatment, even simple everyday tasks can become overwhelming. Dropping off dinner, offering a ride to an appointment, picking up groceries, or helping with the kids can take something off their plate. Sometimes, it's as simple as a phone call or a message letting someone know you're thinking about them. And don't forget the caregivers. They're often juggling quite a bit themselves and could use a little support, too. |

Pink ribbons are nice but we need more year-round attention on this, not just in October.
Sharon D.Totally agree, Sharon. The reminders kind of fade after October, but breast cancer doesn't take a break. Would be good to see more regular outreach.
Not sure everyone knows about those free screenings. More info in local clinics would help.
Kyle M.Good point, Kyle. Maybe the clinics could hang up more flyers or mention it at the front desk. Some folks just don't hear about these things unless it's right in front of them.
Glad they mentioned support for caregivers. Sometimes we forget they’re struggling too.
Daphne L.Absolutely, Daphne. Caregivers carry a heavy load, and a lot of times it's overlooked. Even a small check-in can make a difference for them.
Lost my mom to breast cancer. Doing little things for people really does help. Cooked meals for her friends too. Means a lot.
Brett SanchezSo sorry for your loss, Brett. Dropping off food or just being there really does matter. Sometimes it’s those small acts that keep people going through tough days.
My aunt used the Every Woman Counts program last year and it helped a lot. Don’t let cost stop you from getting checked!
Maria G.That’s wonderful to hear, Maria! I’ve told a few friends about the program but they didn’t know it existed. More folks need to spread the word.
