Before the School Bell Rings

August has arrived, and Simi Valley families are entering that familiar in-between season: part summer fun, part back-to-school scramble.

There may still be time for one more beach day, pool party or spontaneous afternoon adventure, but backpacks, lunch boxes and school-supply lists are quickly taking center stage. Soon, late summer mornings will be replaced by alarm clocks, packed lunches and the search for missing shoes five minutes before heading out the door.

Simi Valley Unified School District students return to class on Wednesday, August 12. Grace Preschool begins August 17, followed by Grace Elementary and Grace Junior/Senior High School on August 19. Families attending other private schools should contact their campuses directly for confirmed start dates, orientations and supply information.

The good news is that back-to-school preparation does not have to take over the rest of summer. Pick one or two small tasks each day—check the calendar, label supplies, plan a few easy breakfasts or start moving bedtime a little earlier.

There is still room for one last summer memory. Just keep one eye on the sunscreen and the other on that growing school-supply pile.

Every year I say we will have a proper last day of summer celebration and every year it just kind of happens without us noticing. Poof and it is gone.

Teachers deserve so much credit. They prep for this all summer while we stress about buying folders for two weeks.

That line about one eye on sunscreen and the other on the supply pile really hit. That is exactly where we are right now.

I told myself I would get ahead of it this year and here I am reading about it instead of doing anything about it.

Grace Preschool on the 17th means my little one starts first. She has no idea what is coming and honestly that is adorable.

I remember when school never started until after Labor Day. Now August feels like it barely exists before it is over.

Three kids, three different supply lists, three different start dates at different schools. August is basically a part time job.

The easy breakfast planning tip is underrated. Having even two or three go-to options ready saves so much stress on school mornings.

We go to one of the private schools and still have not heard anything official from the campus. Hoping they send something out soon.

Pete VasquezWe're in the same boat. I emailed them last week and still nothing. Fingers crossed they send something out before the weekend.

My kids saw their backpacks sitting out and immediately got sad. Summer is really over for them mentally now.

One more pool day is definitely happening this weekend. The school supply pile can wait until Monday.

Ron B.Honestly that sounds like the right call. One more pool day is basically required at this point.

I already labeled everything and I feel like a completely different person this year. Highly recommend doing it before the last minute.

jessicaT_92065Same! I did it two weeks ago and it honestly took like 20 minutes. Future me is going to be so grateful come August 12th morning.

SVUSD on the 12th feels earlier than usual. Did they always start this early in August?

Moving bedtime earlier is the tip I always ignore until the night before school starts. Then it is chaos.

We did our beach day last weekend and now I feel ready to let summer go. Almost.

The missing shoes thing is SO real. Every single morning in this house.

Grace Elementary starting on the 19th gives us a few extra days. Every little bit helps honestly.

August 12 snuck up on me so fast. We still have not even touched the school supply list yet.
