Cooler evenings, fall events, home projects and a few distinctly Simi Valley experiences make October one of the easiest months to get out, try something new and get a little more organized before the holidays arrive.
October has a different rhythm in Simi Valley.
The weather begins to ease, fall activities pick up, yards finally become more inviting again, and the calendar starts filling quickly. Before November and the holiday season arrive, here are 10 ways to make the most of October close to home.
1. Take in a fall night out.
The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center kicks off October with Thursday Night Comedy on Oct. 1, followed later in the month by Jesus Christ Superstar and a James Taylor tribute concert.
2. Give the yard a fall reset.
October begins with several free local workshops covering smart irrigation, lawn transformation, garden design and California-friendly native landscaping. If summer was hard on your yard, this is a good month to rethink what comes next.
3. Visit a pumpkin patch or fall farm.
Underwood Family Farms’ Fall Harvest Festival runs through October 31, with pumpkins, pick-your-own produce, animals, wagon rides and weekend entertainment.
4. Try something seasonal from a local restaurant or bakery.
Pumpkin, cinnamon, apple, chile, pozole and comfort food season is here. Instead of defaulting to the usual chain, make October the month you try one locally owned spot you haven’t visited before.
5. Take one evening walk somewhere different.
The cooler temperatures make October a great time to vary the usual route. Try a neighborhood you haven’t walked lately, a local park or a trail while there is still plenty of evening light.
6. Do one small home project before the holidays.
Not a remodel — something manageable. Clean out a pantry, organize the garage, refresh an outdoor seating area or finally tackle that drawer everyone avoids.
7. See a piece of history while it’s still here.
The Reagan Library’s temporary Opening the Vault exhibit continues through October 14 and features rare original documents from the National Archives.
8. Get ahead of Halloween instead of waiting until Oct. 30.
Check costumes, outdoor lights, candy supplies and pet safety early. If you have older kids, start planning a movie night, haunted attraction or neighborhood activity now rather than scrambling later.
9. Support one local business intentionally.
Pick a restaurant, shop, service provider or maker you haven’t tried and give them a visit. October is a good month to rediscover what is already here in Simi Valley.
10. Leave a little room on the calendar.
October fills up quickly. Between fall events, school activities, sports, Halloween and the start of holiday planning, one of the best things you can do is avoid booking every weekend.
This month in The Simi Signal, we’ll be sharing more fall events, local discoveries, home and garden ideas, Halloween activities and a few simple ways to get ahead before the holidays arrive.
Consider this your reminder to enjoy October before it disappears.

We went to the Reagan Library last weekend and the exhibit is really interesting if you're into history.
Thanks for listing the local restaurant tip! We've been stuck on takeout from the same two places. Time to branch out.
The idea to tackle just one small home project feels doable, haha. Maybe I'll finally organize the garage.
That James Taylor tribute sounds good. Anyone know if you need to buy tickets early for those shows?
I always mean to get out to the pumpkin patch but run out of time. Maybe this year I'll actually go before the crowds hit.
