How One Simi Valley Teen Became a Real-Life Hero Using Lifeguard Training

When Jetta Rose headed to the gym on an ordinary afternoon, she had no idea she was about to save a life.

The Royal High School junior received a call from a friend who knew she worked as a lifeguard.

Someone needed help.

Two Emergencies, Two Lives Saved

Rose arrived to find a woman unresponsive on the floor.

She checked for breathing and a pulse, placed the woman in the recovery position, and called 911.

"Drawing from her training and remaining calm under pressure, she immediately assessed the situation," said Danielle June, recreation supervisor at Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.

Just weeks later, Rose faced another emergency at a restaurant near Cal Poly San Luis Obispo while visiting her brother.

A woman began choking at a nearby table.

Without hesitation, Rose directed her brother to call 911 and instructed the woman's husband on how to perform back blows to clear the obstruction.

Recognized for Heroism

On April 22, the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District board honored Rose with a certificate of commendation—a rare recognition reserved for exceptional service.

"We rarely give certificates of commendation," said District Manager Dan Paranick.

"This is one of those instances where we felt it appropriate."

Training That Saves Lives

Rose joined Rancho Simi Recreation in May 2024 as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Rancho Simi Community Pool.

She's already been named lifeguard of the month.

Erin Pierik, park recreation coordinator and pool manager, said Rose's response proves the value of proper training.

"It is incredibly encouraging to see this level of dedication in this generation of teenagers," Pierik said.

"Jetta and her peers demonstrate a renewed kindness and a genuine willingness to step in and help others without hesitation."

Why This Matters to Simi Valley

Rose's story highlights the critical importance of CPR and lifesaving training programs in Simi Valley.

When young people are equipped with these skills, they don't just learn a job—they become community protectors.

Board member Eric Lundstrom praised Rose's leadership despite her age.

"I would have to put you on my list of role models," he said.

Rose thanked her trainers and colleagues for preparing her to respond effectively in emergencies.

"I'm thankful to be part of such a dedicated team at Rancho pool where everyone looks out for one another and keeps our community safe," Rose said.

"I'm honored to represent RSRPD and I will do everything I can to be rescue ready and serve our community with care and responsibility."
