Royal High Football Coach Dismissed Following Practice Incident

Video of the incident spread online just before the Highlanders opened their 2026 football season

Royal High School entered its new football season under unexpected circumstances last week after head football coach Adam Brubaker was dismissed following an incident involving a student-athlete during practice.

Campus video shows Brubaker approaching players during what appears to be a tense moment before kicking a football that struck one of the players in the groin, causing the student to fall to the ground. The incident prompted an investigation by the Simi Valley Unified School District.

Brubaker told ABC7 that he regretted what happened, saying he had kicked the football but did not intend for it to strike the player. He expressed remorse over the incident.

Following its review, the district removed Brubaker as Royal's head football coach just hours before the Highlanders' season opener on Friday, August 21. The remaining coaching staff took over the program.

Despite the upheaval, Royal opened its season with a 62-0 victory over Monroe High School. The district has said its focus is now on providing stability for the football program and supporting its student-athletes as the season continues.
