If your child is getting ready for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten in Simi Valley next fall, now is a good time to learn the options. The Simi Valley Unified School District has announced two November information nights, and the application process depends on whether your child will attend TK, a neighborhood Kindergarten, or one of the district's specialized programs.

The dates below are for the 2027 to 2028 school year. They come from the district's current enrollment timeline and Kindergarten program information. Some individual school webpages still display details from earlier school years, so use the district's current timeline when dates differ.

First, which program is right for your child?

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two year Kindergarten experience, designed for children who will be four years old by September 1, 2027. That generally means children born from September 2, 2022, through September 1, 2023, who are entering school for the first time. After TK, they progress to Kindergarten.

Kindergarten is generally for children who will be five years old by September 1, 2027. For most first time Kindergarten students, that means a birthday on or before September 1, 2022. Families with questions about grade placement or special circumstances should ask SVUSD directly.

SVUSD describes both programs as full day, taught by credentialed teachers. Tuition and school breakfast and lunch are free. Families can explore the district's Kindergarten programs overview for the differences between TK and Kindergarten.

Two November information nights

Monday, November 9, 2026 at 6 p.m.:

Monday, November 16, 2026 at 6 p.m.:

Kindergarten Information Night on Zoom. Learn about Kindergarten programs and enrollment options. Register for the Kindergarten webinar.

Both information nights are listed on SVUSD's current Kindergarten program page. Registration is required to receive the joining details.

How to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten

TK enrollment is handled by the SVUSD District Office, rather than through the ordinary School of Choice process. TK is offered at selected elementary schools and school placement depends on available classroom space.

December 1, 2026:

TK enrollment packets become available online and at the district office.

February 5, 2027: Deadline to return a completed TK packet for priority enrollment. Applications submitted afterward may still be accepted, but school placement is based on remaining space.

Families return their packets to 101 West Cochran Street, Simi Valley. SVUSD lists required items including a completed form, proof of birth, proof of address, current immunization records and an age eligibility form. The district's enrollment page contains the forms and document checklist, including Spanish language resources. Families unable to print can request a paper packet from the district office.

How Kindergarten enrollment and School of Choice work

Families planning to use their neighborhood elementary school should first check their assigned campus through the SVUSD enrollment and school boundary resources and follow the school's Kindergarten registration instructions.

Families seeking a different neighborhood school must apply through the district's School of Choice process. The application deadline is February 5, 2027. Admission depends on available space, with a lottery and possible waitlist. School of Choice is not the standard TK enrollment process.

Some programs have earlier deadlines

Arroyo Elementary Dual Language Academy:

Its English and Spanish immersion program includes TK and Kindergarten. The priority enrollment interest form is due December 17, 2026. Families must attend a parent meeting, and prospective students complete a language assessment. Read Arroyo's program and interest form details.

Hollow Hills and Vista Fundamental Schools:

These are application only Kindergarten options. The district's timeline lists a January 15, 2027 lottery application deadline and a January 19 lottery drawing. Families offered a place must turn in acceptance paperwork by February 5.

The district also shows an earlier sibling priority process, but its published timeline contains conflicting December 11 and December 17 dates for that item. If applying for sibling priority, contact the district or school directly and aim for the earlier date rather than relying on an uncertain cutoff. See SVUSD's Fundamental Schools information and the current enrollment timeline.

What to have ready

For most new students, families should prepare an official birth certificate or other acceptable proof of birth, proof of Simi Valley residency and current immunization records.

Kindergarten enrollment also includes an oral health assessment requirement, with timing specified by the district. Families should review the complete enrollment paperwork checklist before submitting forms.

A few practical steps before applying

Start by checking your child's age eligibility, then locate your neighborhood school. If you are interested in Arroyo's Dual Language Academy or a Fundamental School, compare their earlier deadlines with the standard enrollment timeline. Attend the relevant November webinar and save the registration confirmation. Finally, gather documents before the December and February deadlines arrive.

For assistance, SVUSD lists Educational Services at (805) 306 4500, extension 4207, and the District Office at 101 West Cochran Street. The best starting point for current dates, applications and school options is SVUSD's official enrollment page.

Information reviewed November 2, 2026, for the 2027 to 2028 school year. Confirm deadlines and program requirements with SVUSD, especially where older school webpages or conflicting notices appear.
