A $1 million state grant is helping move the Simi Valley Family YMCA expansion closer to completion. The funding was announced October 23 as work was getting underway on a project intended to give the community more room for recreation, fitness and family programs.

According to the Southeast Ventura County YMCA's October 23 announcement, the expansion is estimated to cost $7.5 million. The organization says it still needs approximately $1.5 million to reach its funding goal.

What's planned for the expanded YMCA

The project is designed to turn the existing facility into a larger center with more options for different ages and interests.

The YMCA's plans call for:

  • full-size gymnasium
  • expanded fitness space
  • larger Kids' Zone
  • three multipurpose rooms
  • family shower facilities.

When completed, the facility is expected to total approximately 40,000 square feet. For families, that could mean more space for youth activities and child-focused programs. For other members, it could mean additional room for exercise, classes and community gatherings. Specific programs and schedules will depend on what the YMCA offers when the facility reopens.

Residents can explore the proposed improvements on the YMCA's Capital Expansion Project page, which provides the organization's overview of the project.

Construction is moving forward

The YMCA reports that Simi Valley approved the final construction permits in early October and that demolition work has begun. Those are significant steps for a project that has been in development and fundraising for some time.

The current target is to reopen in fall 2027. That is a projected timeline rather than a guaranteed opening date. As the work proceeds, construction milestones and schedules may change.

The YMCA's project updates page is the best place to follow new announcements about construction and the facility's progress.

What does the $1 million grant mean?

The newly announced state funding covers part of the overall $7.5 million project cost. The YMCA says approximately $1.5 million remains to be raised, so the grant is an important milestone rather than the final piece of financing.

The October 23 funding announcement describes the state grant and the project's progress. The YMCA's capital project page provides broader information about the expansion and its fundraising effort.

Why the expansion matters locally

For many Simi Valley households, the YMCA is more than a place to work out. It serves children, parents, older adults and people looking for opportunities to be active and connect with others.

A full-size gym and additional multipurpose space could expand the kinds of activities the facility can accommodate. The larger Kids' Zone and family shower facilities are also intended to make the center more useful to families. Exactly which new classes, programs and hours will be available should become clearer closer to reopening.

What to watch next

The next milestones to follow are construction progress, the remaining fundraising effort and announcements about reopening. The YMCA has not yet provided a firm reopening day, so residents should treat fall 2027 as the current goal.

We'll continue watching the project as work progresses. In the meantime, residents interested in seeing the plans or following construction can visit the official Simi Valley Family YMCA expansion page.

Information based on the YMCA's October 23, 2026 announcement and its project webpages. Timelines, funding needs and facility plans may change as the project moves forward.

That’s a lot of money. I wonder if they’ll keep prices affordable for seniors.

I'm a little worried about parking after the expansion. Gets crowded already.

Ron C.Yeah, that’s a good point. Even now it fills up fast on weeknights. I hope they share some parking plans as the project moves along.

Always thought our Y was too small for the crowd. More space will be nice. Especially for basketball.

Glad they got the grant. Hope they can finish raising the rest. My kids love the YMCA programs.
