Interest in e-bike laws is rising across Simi Valley as families prepare for back-to-school routines and embrace sun-filled days.

Parents are increasingly choosing e-bikes to give teens greater independence, hoping to beat long car lines in the morning.

Navigating registration requirements and legalities can be daunting for first-timers.

California classifies electric bicycles in three groups, and every e-bike sold in Simi Valley must display its class, directly affecting access and safety rules, like helmet laws and minimum age.

The city recently updated codes to address e-bike safety, empowering officers to issue citations for rule violations and impound illegal vehicles, especially those used by minors.

While registration isn’t compulsory, it’s strongly recommended to aid recovery if bikes are stolen—a persistent local issue.

As new bike lanes and cycling events appear, understanding the law and riding respectfully have never mattered more.

Major Employer Relocating to Simi Valley

Simi Valley’s business community is gaining significant momentum with the upcoming arrival of Pennymac, a national mortgage lender currently based in Moorpark.

The company plans to relocate more than 1,000 employees to Simi Valley, keeping those jobs in Ventura County while bringing one of the area’s largest private employers into the city.

The move is an encouraging development for Simi Valley following recent business closures and employment losses. In addition to strengthening the local job base, the influx of employees could provide a welcome boost to nearby restaurants, retailers and service businesses.

Pennymac’s relocation joins other signs of economic growth around the city, including new restaurants, expanding businesses and continued efforts to attract employers to available commercial properties. City officials view the move as an important step in building a stronger and more diverse local economy.

Simi Valley Citizens Police Academy

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the Simi Valley Police Department? The department’s Citizens Police Academy gives local residents and employees an inside look at police operations and the Ventura County criminal justice system.

The free, 10-week program is taught by representatives from the Simi Valley Police Department, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, and other partner agencies. Participants learn about patrol operations, criminal investigations, narcotics enforcement, dispatch, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, the K-9 Unit, S.W.A.T., and other areas of law enforcement.

The Fall 2026 Citizens Police Academy is scheduled to begin Thursday, August 27. Classes are generally held once a week in the evening for approximately two and a half hours, primarily at the Simi Valley Police Department. Two sessions may be conducted at off-site locations. Participants may also have the opportunity to join a uniformed officer for a police ride-along.

There is no cost to attend, but space is limited to 25 participants. Applicants must be adults who live or work in Simi Valley and cannot have a felony conviction or pending criminal action. A brief criminal-history review is required before acceptance.

Important Application Dates

The deadline to request an application for the Fall 2026 academy was Friday, July 17. Residents who missed the deadline may still call to ask about cancellations, possible late openings, or placement on the waiting list for the next session.

To request more information or join the waiting list, call Volunteer Coordinator Janet Seghi at (805) 583-6287 and leave your name, the correct spelling of your name, and your contact information.

Giant Reed:

What Simi Valley Residents Need to Know

Ventura County’s Civil Grand Jury is sounding the alarm about Arundo donax, better known as giant reed—an invasive plant that’s spreading through local waterways and raising wildfire risk across the region, including here in Simi Valley.

  • Arundo donax - Alchetron, The Free Social Encyclopedia

  • Arundo Donax

Arundo grows fast, burns even faster, and sends embers flying—exactly the kind of fuel that can turn a small ignition into a fast‑moving brush fire.

The Grand Jury noted 158 fires in Ventura County river bottoms over the past decade where Arundo was present.

While the report focused on Camarillo, the same conditions exist in Simi’s waterways, especially areas near:

  • Arroyo Simi
  • Tapo Canyon
  • Sycamore Creek
  •
  • Corridors bordering neighborhoods in the foothills

  •

🌱 The Core Problem

Despite a 2015 commitment to eradicate Arundo countywide, the Grand Jury found no coordinated plan, no dedicated funding, and inconsistent removal methods.

Some crews even mowed or mulched the plant—actions that can help it spread. The only method proven to work is cut‑and‑daub, which requires cutting the stalk and immediately applying herbicide.

🏘️ What This Means for Local Residents

For Simi Valley neighborhoods near creekbeds, the concern is simple: more Arundo means more fire fuel.

The Grand Jury is urging Ventura County to finally create a unified strategy so cities like Simi aren’t left with unmanaged vegetation that increases wildfire vulnerability.

As temperatures here in Simi Valley soar, we turn up the AC and grab an iced coffee. But for our furry family members, extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable—it can quickly become life-threatening.

Dogs and cats don't sweat the way we do; they rely on panting and their paw pads to cool down, which isn't nearly as efficient when the air itself is stifling.

Here is what every local pet owner needs to know to keep their companions safe, comfortable, and healthy during a heatwave.
