Trivia QuestionβWhich famous folk singer lived in Simi Valley, California during the 1970s? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
Wildlife Crossing Lessons Could Shape Future Roads Across Southern California
Caltrans has awarded a $700,000 planning grant to support a new Regional Wildlife Connectivity Study led by the Southern California Association of Governments. The funding is part of a larger $23.6 million statewide grant package supporting 58 local planning projects focused on climate resilience, greenhouse gas reduction and natural disaster preparedness.
The grant comes as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills moves into its final phase. The landmark project, designed to help mountain lions and other wildlife safely cross the freeway, is now more than 60% complete and is expected to officially open on Dec. 2.
The crossing was created to address one of the most critical wildlife bottlenecks in the Santa Monica Mountains, where freeway barriers have contributed to habitat fragmentation, genetic isolation and increased risk for local animal populations.
Now, regional planners want to take the lessons learned from that project and apply them more broadly.
Rather than treating wildlife crossings as one-time exceptions, the new study will look at how Southern California can build a more connected and coordinated wildlife infrastructure network. That may include vegetated overpasses, underpasses, fencing and other design features that help animals move safely through developed areas.
The study will cover the six-county SCAG region, which includes Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial counties. SCAG will partner with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority to create mapping tools, data resources and planning guidelines for local jurisdictions.
The goal is to make wildlife-friendly transportation planning more practical, consistent and cost-effective as future road and highway projects are developed.
Supporters say the effort could help protect vulnerable wildlife, reduce vehicle collisions and strengthen habitat connections across one of the most developed yet ecologically diverse regions in the country. |

The Changing Face of Ventura County:What It Means for Simi Valley |
1. The Real Estate Pressure
2. High Cost of Living & Daily Expenses
3. The Demographic Shift
Because the entry barrier for young families is so high, the county's makeup is shifting rapidly
What This Means Moving Forward
While homeownership stability among existing residents remains relatively strong at 64%, the report warns of a future economic risk.
Without an intentional strategy to attract higher-wage industries (such as financial firms) or expand accessible housing options, the county risks completely pricing out the younger workforce needed to sustain the local economy and community services over the long term. |
