Local Lodging Tax Measure Slated for November Ballot |
For the first time in over three decades, local voters will decide on a structural update to Simi Valleyβs tourism revenue.
The City Council voted unanimously to place a Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) measure on the upcoming November 2026 ballot, aiming to increase the visitor lodging rate from 10% to 12%.
Simultaneously, a freshly approved short-term rental ordinance establishes a formal permit framework, ensuring platform listings like Airbnb comply with standard city oversight and contribute evenly to local lodging tax collections.
If approved by residents this fall, the 2% adjustment is projected to channel roughly $400,000 in dedicated revenue annually straight into Simi Valley's general fund. Officials emphasized that the fiscal impact falls entirely on overnight out-of-town visitors rather than residents, adding about $3.50 per night to an average local $175 hotel room stay.
Because the revenue is explicitly designated as locally controlled funding, the state cannot redirect the money, ensuring every dollar raised goes straight toward local street repairs, public safety enhancements, and community programs like Meals on Wheels.

Following last monthβs Sandy fire, which burned nearly 2,200 acres, Simi Valley city leaders are thanking the many people who stepped up to protect and support the community.
More than 1,400 firefighters, along with law enforcement agencies, public safety teams, nonprofits, and local volunteers, played a role in the response.
Mayor DeeDee Cavanaugh and the Simi Valley City Council issued a letter recognizing the courage and commitment of those who worked to protect lives, homes, and neighborhoods.
The city also thanked residents for following evacuation orders, supporting neighbors, and showing the community spirit Simi Valley is known for during difficult times.
The fire was fully contained on May 27. Its cause remains under investigation, according to CAL FIRE.
For official emergency information and evacuation updates during future incidents, residents should rely on the City of Simi Valley and Ventura County emergency channels.
