Fall is a good time to clear out the clutter before holiday decorating, guests, and end-of-year projects begin. This week, Simi Valley residents have an extra reason to get started: Free Landfill Day is Sunday, October 18, giving households a chance to dispose of eligible items at no charge. The easiest way to tackle a clean-out is to sort everything into four categories: toss, donate, recycle, or special disposal. Broken household items may be ready for the landfill, while usable clothing, books, toys, décor, and small furniture can often be donated. Cardboard, paper, metal cans, bottles, and other accepted materials should be separated for recycling. Some items—including electronics, paint, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, chemicals, and motor oil—need special handling and should not go into regular trash. Start small with one garage shelf, one closet, one patio corner, or one junk drawer. A few short clean-out sessions can make a noticeable difference. Before loading the car, check the Free Landfill Day rules so you know what is accepted and what needs to be handled separately. Read More... |

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there are plenty of ways to make a difference—starting with taking care of yourself. Whether it's scheduling an overdue health appointment, checking in on a friend going through treatment, or offering a little help to a neighbor, small gestures can mean a lot. There are also opportunities to get involved right here in Ventura County. Relay For Life of Simi-Moorpark returns to Simi Valley Town Center on Saturday, October 17, with a full day of community activities, survivor recognition, and remembrance. The Ventura Breast Cancer Walk takes place Sunday, October 18, and local fundraising efforts continue throughout the month. We've rounded up a few simple ways to support your own health and the people around you, along with local events and resources worth knowing about. Read more for event details, helpful resources, and ways to get involved. Read More... |

We've started putting together a guide to local pumpkin patches, trunk-or-treats, fall festivals and Halloween activities. There are some fun events coming up this weekend, and plenty more as we get closer to October 31.
We'll keep adding events as we find and verify them.

Quote Of The Day |
Beat the Crowds to Simi Valley's Fall Trail Windows Simi Valley's Santa Susana Pass and Hummingbird Trail corridors hit their sweet spot in October and early November, when temperatures finally drop below 80°F and the scrub oak starts showing color — but trail parking fills by 8 a.m. on weekends once word gets out. This week, pull up the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District schedule and lock in any permit-required areas or guided nature walks now, before the October rush makes same-day access nearly impossible. While you're planning, pack a light layer even for afternoon hikes — Simi Valley's inland location means temperatures can swing 25 degrees between a sunny noon and a shaded canyon at 4 p.m. in fall. A small packable jacket tucked into your daypack costs nothing but saves the trip from ending early. |

An overflowing closet, crowded garage shelf, or kitchen drawer that barely closes—sometimes the hardest part of a clean-out is deciding where to begin. This week’s AI Made Simple shows how to use ChatGPT to turn one small space into a manageable week of 15-minute tasks. Describe the area or upload a photo, explain your goal, and ask for a plan that uses supplies you already have. AI can help you sort tasks into keep, donate, sell, recycle, and dispose of properly—while leaving the decisions about your belongings to you. If the plan feels overwhelming, ask for just one easy task to finish today. You’ll also find a prompt for working through sentimental items without feeling pressured to let them go, plus a reminder to check donation and recycling rules before heading out. You don’t have to tackle the whole house. One drawer, one shelf, one small win is a good place to start. Read More... |
