Three mountain lion cubs born in the Simi Hills are giving wildlife researchers a rare reason for hope.
Researchers found the litter near Simi Valley after their mother, P-113, a tracked cougar, stayed in one area longer than usual.
Her first known litter includes one female and two males, identified as P-141, P-142 and P-143.
The discovery is especially meaningful in hills bordered by neighborhoods and the 101 freeway, where cougars face shrinking connections between habitats.
Highways and development can prevent unrelated mountain lions from finding one another, threatening the population’s genetic diversity over time.
P-113 has been tracked since she was tagged as a cub in 2023, giving researchers a close look at her journey into motherhood.
Although she was previously seen with a male cougar, P-124, the cubs’ parentage remains unconfirmed.
For Simi Valley residents, the litter is both a welcome sight and a reminder that safe wildlife crossings could help these animals survive. Read More... |

Tip of The Week |
Catch the Hidden Cottonwood Color on the Arroyo Simi Trail Most people think of fall foliage as a mountain activity, but Simi Valley has its own subtle seasonal show happening right now along the Arroyo Simi trail corridor. The cottonwood and sycamore trees lining the wash turn a warm gold and amber in November, and the cooler morning temps — often dipping into the low 50s — make the stretch between Madera Road and Tapo Canyon Road genuinely pleasant before 9 a.m. This week, set out before breakfast with a thermos of something warm. Walk east so the rising sun hits the tree canopy from behind you, which makes the yellow leaves practically glow. The trail is flat, paved in sections, and easy to cut short if you need to get back — but most people end up going farther than planned once they're out there. It's one of those local spots that residents drive past for years without actually stopping to enjoy. |
